PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide — a purified fragment of DNA, usually taken from salmon or trout. In Korean skincare it turns up in serums, creams, toners and masks, where it acts as a humectant and conditioning agent that helps skin look smoother, plumper and better hydrated. It is not the same thing as the PDRN used in clinics.
Where PDRN comes from?
PDRN is made from fish milt — most often salmon or trout. The DNA is extracted and put through high-temperature purification that strips out proteins and peptides, leaving short, standardized fragments of nucleotides behind.
Fish is used for a practical reason rather than a romantic one: salmon DNA is structurally close enough to human DNA that it tends not to provoke a reaction, and salmon milt is an abundant by-product of an industry that already exists. It has been used in Italian and Korean pharmaceutical products since the 1990s, mostly for wound care and tissue work — the medical literature on it, including this review of PDRN's pharmacological activity and clinical use, is genuinely substantial.
Vegan PDRN - also known as "plant PDRN," Phyto PDRN, or "plant-derived PDRN" uses DNA fragments from other sources such as seaweed, oat, red bean, matcha, ginseng, mugwort, etc. These are nucleotide-rich plant extracts, not the salmon-derived molecule. It works to trigger the skin's A2A adenosine receptors to repair the skin, reduce inflammation, and support collagen.
Is PDRN really salmon sperm?
Essentially, yes — and the wording is doing a lot of heavy lifting in both directions.
Milt is the seminal fluid of male fish, and it's where the DNA is harvested from. By the time it reaches a serum it has been purified to the point where nothing organic remains but the nucleotide fragments themselves. There's no fishy smell, no residual protein, nothing recognizable. If the idea still bothers you, that's a completely reasonable place to land, and the plant-derived versions exist precisely for people who feel that way.
What the ppm number on the bottle means?
PPM means parts per million. A product advertising 10,000 ppm PDRN contains 1% PDRN. One advertising 5,000 ppm contains 0.5%. The number looks enormous because the unit is small — which is, of course, why the unit was chosen.
A higher ppm isn't automatically better, either. Concentration tells you nothing about the molecular weight of the fragments, whether there's any delivery system, or how stable the ingredient is in that particular formula. Two products at the same ppm can behave completely differently. Treat it as one data point, not a ranking.
Injectable PDRN vs PDRN skincare
Here's the honest version of the difference, because the two get blurred constantly — usually to the benefit of whoever is selling the cheaper one.
The skin's outer layer is selective about what it lets through. The rough working threshold in dermatology is around 500 daltons, and molecules much larger than that don't cross intact skin by passive diffusion. PDRN fragments are measured in the tens to hundreds of kilodaltons — orders of magnitude above that line. Dermatology Times covered this directly in a piece on PDRN serums, pointing out that standard-molecular-weight PDRN applied topically is unlikely to reach the deeper skin cells that the injectable version targets, and that most brands don't disclose the molecular weight or delivery data that would let anyone check.
Formulators do have tools for this — encapsulation, nanosizing, spicules, micro-channels — and research into penetration enhancement for topical formulations is an active field. But "there is a plausible approach" and "this specific bottle has been shown to work" are different statements.

So what does PDRN skincare actually do?
It moisturizes, and it does it well.
PDRN is strongly water-binding, which is why PDRN products so often feel plumping and dewy on application. Skin that's properly hydrated looks smoother, bounces back better, and shows fine lines less. That's a real, visible, worthwhile effect — it just isn't a clinical one, and it's the same category of benefit you'd get from a very good hyaluronic acid product.

Worth trying if your skin is dry, dehydrated, or looking a bit flat and tired; if you're in a cold, winter climate and your usual routine has stopped keeping up; or if you like a well-rounded hydrating layer that plays nicely with everything else.
