Chemical vs. Mineral
Did you know there are typically two kinds of sunscreens on the market? You’ve probably heard “chemical” and “mineral” when it comes to SPF but what does that actually mean?

Chemical sunscreens work to ABSORB the sun’s UV rays and convert them into non-damaging heat which is then immediately released. Chemical sunscreens are known to be hydrating and have a weightless texture. It’s made best for those with normal, oily, combination, and dry skin. However, it usually takes around 20-30 minutes for it to fully absorb into your skin for full sun protection.
Mineral sunscreens on the other hand, act as a PHYSICAL barrier. Hence why, these types of sunscreens are often referred to as “physical sunscreens” as well. It typically contains Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide to reflect UV rays away. It’s best recommended for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin as it doesn’t absorb into the skin so it sits on top of the skin to bounce away UV rays. Additionally, it starts working to protect your skin immediately upon application.
☀️ SPF TIPS TO REMEMBER ☀️
Now that you’ve learned about the different types of sunscreens, here are some helpful sunscreen tips to remember!
- Apply at least 2 fingers length worth of sunscreen for maximum protection.
- Wear SPF every. single. day. Yes, even in gloomy weather. Although it may not seem like the sun is shining, its harmful UV rays can peak through the clouds!
-
Reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours! Especially after swimming or sweating.
